Happy September! In today’s article, we are going to be discussing a topic that is often overlooked, and that is how to prepare animals for seasonal changes, more specifically Summer to Autumn, so without further ado, let’s begin and get your furry friend ready for this change.
As the long summer days draw to a close, temperatures will begin to drop and daylight will become shorter, for animals, this can affect their mental and physical health, how? Take a look below:
Confusion and Behaviour Changes
Shedding and Growing Their Winter Coat
Eating More to Gain Weight
Sleeping More and Body Clock Changes Due to the Darker Nights
These are just some of the changes that your pet will go through from season to season. With these handy tips, we can help your pet feel as comfortable as possible during Autumn.
Exercise
Although there are still some warmer days in Autumn, most days will more than likely be chilly. Choose a time when the temperature is dry or you could find ways to keep them active indoors with toys, or pop-up indoor apparatus like a playpen or tunnel. Also, don’t forget to purchase a waterproof coat for your dog to avoid unpleasant walks on those cold and rainy outings.
Grooming
While the seasons are changing, it is vital that you groom your pet’s fur to help the shedding process. Their winter coats will start to grow through around this time so take this step further and keep their skin and fur in good health.
Chemicals
This is a step that you must be cautious of as we reach these colder temperatures. This time of year, we will begin to take our coolants, antifreeze, and winter cleaning products back out of the cupboards. These products can be toxic to pets, so you must keep these out of reach of your pets when storing them and keep pets clear of the location when in use.
Here at Changing Lives at Carrington, we have successfully and safely rehomed more than 1,600 animals. From cats to rabbits, our team have extensive combined experiences within the animal care world.
